Our North Berwick Harbour Wall Reconstruction scheme has been recognised within the Best Project Under £2M Award category at the Scottish Civil Engineering Awards, celebrating a scheme that has restored a historic landmark for the community.
The project was delivered by Southbay Civil Engineering Ltd, working in partnership with East Lothian Council and Haskoning.
The team overcame significant challenges to strengthen and restore the Grade B listed harbour wall, which had suffered damage during Storm Babet.
North Berwick Harbour is central to the town’s heritage and identity.
Following the storm damage, emergency repairs were carried out to prevent further deterioration.
The reconstruction project then began, with the goal of providing a long-term solution that would both protect the harbour and maintain its historic character.
The works included:
- Reconstruction of the lower section of the wall, reinstatement of the deck, and removal of temporary sea defences installed during the emergency phase.
- Completion of the deck infill and the careful placement of blockwork to restore the harbour wall’s original appearance.
- A series of major concrete pours, with a 56-metre concrete pump placing more than 200m³ of concrete to form a new parapet wall.
The success of the scheme relied heavily on close collaboration.
Southbay Civil Engineering, East Lothian Council, and Haskoning worked together to manage the technical complexity of the project, whilst ensuring that the historic fabric of the harbour was respected and retained.
For North Berwick, the restored harbour wall provides resilience against future storms, safeguarding a much-loved landmark for residents and visitors.
