ROKER PIER REPAIRS, SUNDERLAND

Project details

The contract involved essential repair and restoration works to the Grade II listed Roker Pier, located at the entrance to the Port of Sunderland. The pier provides vital coastal protection and access for the port, forming an important part of the city’s maritime infrastructure.

The project focused on reinstating and strengthening key structural elements across both the lighthouse and lower deck areas. Works included the construction of new in-situ reinforced concrete copings, replacement of damaged deck sections, and installation of a new handrailing and post system designed to match the piers original aesthetic.

Handrailing and post system installation

The lighthouse deck area required approximately 18m of new reinforced concrete coping to replace missing stones, and a 42m² coloured and textured concrete deck replicating the existing red and white granite pattern. The lower deck works included the installation of 93m of new handrailing and 16 vertical posts.

The project was delivered in accordance with heritage guidelines to preserve the pier’s historical and architectural significance.

Working within a marine environment subject to adverse weather and tidal conditions required careful scheduling and risk management. The site’s popularity with the public also demanded strict safety controls and coordination with planned local events.
