Middlesbrough College Students Gain First-Hand Experience at Redcar Bulk Terminal

This week, Southbay Civil Engineering was delighted to welcome students from Middlesbrough College to Redcar Bulk Terminal for an engaging and educational site visit. The visit offered students a unique opportunity to experience a live construction environment and learn more about the diverse career paths available within the civil engineering industry.

Two groups attended sessions throughout the day, where they began with a presentation introducing Southbay, exploring the different routes into the industry. The team discussed how civil engineering brings together a range of skills and disciplines, from design and planning to site management and hands-on technical work.

Students were then introduced to the scope of Southbay’s ongoing works at Redcar Bulk Terminal, where the team is delivering essential civil engineering improvements to support the long-term operation and development of the site.

The visit continued with a guided tour of the site, where students learned about the methods and equipment used in heavy civil engineering, including large-scale excavation, Piling, reinforced concrete works, and the use of specialist plant and machinery. The experience gave students a real insight into how projects are managed safely and efficiently, from planning through to delivery.

The sessions sparked plenty of curiosity and conversation, with students asking thoughtful questions about the industry, project management, and what it’s like to work on major infrastructure projects.
